Sukhumvit area contains variety of Japanese restaurant vary from affordable lunch set to exquisite Kaiseki (懐石) cuisine. The term also refers to the collection of skills and techniques that allow the preparation of such meals and is analogous to Western haute cuisine.
Umenohana Solaria are located at Solaria luxurious Nishitetsu Hotel Bangkok. Conveniently next to BTS Asoke with an exclusive junction from BTS station. Umenohana (“Plum Blossom”) was first established in 1976 in Japan specializing in Crab and also later Tofu dishes which I am experiencing Tofu Kaiseki lunch set today.
As I arrived around late afternoon, there are not many guest in the restaurant. I was impressed with the staff services level since they provide such excellent etiquette close to what I experienced in Kaiseki establishment in japan. The ambiance are peaceful with amazing traditional background music which seems like a perfect place for a tranquility retreat from chaotic Sukhumvit street.
Starting off with a contrast between of cold Mineoka Tofu (Left) and hot Steamed Egg custard (Right). Menoka Tofu are cold with delicate texture supported by a fresh citrusy Yuzu sauce. Steamed Egg custard are also enjoyable with delicate texture combined with small shrimp.
Tofu Shumai are presented beautifully with a kick off mustard on top to spice things up.
Yuba Age are Fried tofu blended with steam fish ball which exceeded my expectations. The texture are perfectly crispy without being too oily and seasoning are just perfect. This is my highlight for this meal.
Tofu salad with crispy potato on top, Miso soup, pickles and rice are up to enjoyable level.
Fuku Fuku Tofu are Fresh Tofu served with “Mabo An” sauce which seems like a mild Mapo Tofu version. The main idea is to reflect Tofu natural taste and texture.
Lastly, dessert was Mineoka fruits as a light way to end this enjoyable Kaiseki Tofu lunch set. I would says the place are more suitable for a more formal business meeting with an excellent cuisine, services and ambiance. Also, an adventurous way to experience Tofu base lunch set in a healthy and satisfying feeling at the end of a meal.
If you have been following my blog closely. You will surely know that I always have a soft spot for a good beef or seafood meal from my past experience in Hokkaido. As soon as I heard that there is a good Wagyu deal on lunch set around Sukhumvit 49 area, I just rush to the restaurant just to clarify how good this deal is.
Yamato Yakiniku are a branch of well-known restaurant from Iwate. Wagyu lunch set are from 190 THB to 290 THB. The pricing are just shockingly insane compared to other places. Presentation photos looks nice so let’s check it out.
I ordered a Jyou Wagyu set A [290 THB] and it was beautiful. Wagyu texture seems to be a sight to behold to marbling just waiting to be sizzle to perfection. I will review each parts of Wagyu based on each photos.
Wagyu Jyou Karubi
The best Wagyu from the plate. Majestic beautiful texture speaks for itself. Just grill for a brief moment then enjoy with salt, tare(sauce) or vinegar as your heart desire.
Wagyu Jyou Rosu
Less marbling fat content resulted in more firm texture. Therefore, less grilling are required for this part.
Gyu Tan (Jyou Shio Tan)
Gyu Tan are well-known as a signature dish around Sendai area of Japan. My favorite way to enjoy is just grill for a short duration then topped with lime and salt to enjoy Gyu Tan amazing texture.
Nakaochi are served as a cube shape rib Wagyu. Texture are more on a bit chewy but not too chewy in a good way.
Wagyu Jyou Harami
Harami is one of the top runners in this set as a balance marble and meat ratio. Just try to grill for a brief period.
Finished with a Vanilla ice cream. Overall bill came out as 400 THB plus drinks and service charge which is acceptable for me. I would surely came back to try out another menu if possible for sure.
Nowadays Bangkok have been extremely hot which gave a clear sunny day vibe. One of tradition I remember in Japan is eating Unagi (鰻) in summer period since they believe Unagi improves health and heat resistance. Luckily Unatoto is located close by Bangkok in Sukhumvit 33/1 close to BTS Phrom Phong station.
This restaurant is a branch from Japan which serves affordable Unagi with a twist of Thai additional menu such as spicy Unagi Salad. Unadon and Unaju ranges from 1xx to 7xx THB as biggest Bikkuriju. The difference between Unadon (鰻丼) and Unaju (鰻重) could be observed as Unadon (鰻丼) are served in circular bowl when Unaju (鰻重) are served in rectangular box called jūbako (重箱).

Unagi Tempura [195 THB]
Unagi is a commonly found in Japanese restaurant. Unagi Tempura on the other hand is a rare sight since Tempura and Unagi Kabayaki techniques are considered as complicate cooking method in which each restaurant takes pride in their specialties. That is why I just had to try this one out when I got a chance.
Tempura are served crispy and light with a side of salt mixed with Sanshō (山椒) Sanshō is a deciduous aromatic spiny shrub or small tree of the citrus and rue family Rutaceae, native to Japan and Korea. Unagi provides a sweet and juicy texture inside combine with Tempura and little seasoning, I am quite satisfied with this menu.
Karaage Chicken [95 THB]
Resides on juicy yet not too crispy fried chicke with good seasoning. Would prefer more crispy one but that is just my preference.
Hitsuma Bushi L size [310 THB]
Hitsuma Bushi could be enjoyed by three different ways. First, plainly with rice and Unagi. Second, Mix with Negi and toppings and my favorite way by adding some soup making it similar to porridge.
Unagi are chopped into bite size pieces combined with clear soup makes an simple and relaxing meal. There is also a wasabi in case you would like to spice things up.
Finished my afternoon with beautifully decorated Latte art and petite size dessert from D’Ark cafe.
